Winner: SecondBite
SecondBite is committed to making a positive difference to people by identifying sources of nutritious surplus fresh food and produce that would otherwise go to waste and facilitating its safe and timely distribution to agencies and people in need. In 2011 SecondBite collected over 1 million kgs of fresh surplus food. With 510 volunteers, enough food to provide almost 2 million hearty meals was provided to 307 community food programs across Australia.

Melbourne City Rooftop Honey is a unique project that aims to bring bees back to our cities. Concerned by a growing sense of disconnection between food production and consumption and inspired by hundred year old practices in Europe. Melbourne City Rooftop Honey have created something uniquely Melbourne in their project. This project not only seeks to address issues of sustainability, it also aims to raise awareness of the importance of bees whilst creating delicious honey. By planning hives on the roof spaces of cafes, restaurants, hotels and individual’s gardens in and around Melbourne, they have reduced the distance from production to plate to mere metres.
